What is limoncello? Limoncello is an Italian lemon liqueur. Limoncello is the second most popular liqueur in Italy after Campari. This Italian yellow liquor is quickly becoming popular in the USA.
Limoncello Recipe
What is a limoncello recipe? Traditionally, limoncello is made from the zest of lemons. Then zest is then steeped in vodka until the lemon essential oil is released. The yellow liquid is then mixed with simple syrup which is limoncello.

I love lemons. Now that I live in Florida, I love growing my own lemons. One thing I make with those lemons is lemon cupcakes. However, I thought I could make lemon cupcakes even better with limoncello alcohol.

I do have another limoncello dessert on Seduction in the Kitchen with my Instant Pot Limoncello Bread Pudding {Carrabba’s Recipe Made Simple} I felt like I needed another limoncello dessert, so why not with limoncello alcohol infused lemon cupcakes!
Limoncello Alcohol Infused
There is plenty of limoncello cupcakes out there, but what makes my limoncello alcohol infused cupcakes stand out is the limoncello alcohol gel I added to the middle of the cupcakes!
I wanted the lemon flavor to pop in this cupcake recipe. So not only is their limoncello in the actual cupcake and buttercream, but there is limoncello alcohol suspended in the middle!
Maybe I went overboard with the limoncello for this lemon cupcake recipe. I love limoncello desserts! I can not think of a better use for homemade limoncello recipe than with yummy cupcakes!

Limoncello Cupcakes (Limoncello Alcohol Infused}
Limoncello Cupcakes are lemon cupcakes with limoncello alcohol! This limoncello dessert will be the hit of any special event!
Ingredients
Cupcakes
- 1 box lemon cake mix
- 1 1/4 cups water
- 1/4 cup Limoncello
- 1/3 cup vegetable oil
- 2 eggs
- 1 box vanilla pudding
Limoncello Buttercream
- 1 cup sugar
- 4 egg whites
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
- 1/2 cup vegetable shorting
- 1/4 cup limoncello
- 2 teaspoons lemon extract
- yellow gel food color
Limoncello Gel
- 1 cup clear piping gel
- 1/4 cup limoncello
- yellow gel food color
Instructions
Limoncello Gel
- mix the clear piping gel with the limoncello.
- Add a few drops of the yellow gel food color.
- Mix well and set aside.
Cupcakes
- Heat oven to 350°F
- Place paper baking cup muffin baking pan.
- In large bowl, beat cupcake ingredients with electric mixer on low speed 30 seconds, then on medium speed 2 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally.
- Divide batter evenly among muffin cups, filling each about two-thirds full.
- Bake 18 to 23 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
- Cool in pan 10 minutes.
- Remove from pan to cooling rack.
Limoncello Buttercream
- Combine the sugar and egg whites in a medium heatproof bowl and place over a pan of simmering water.
- Whisk the sugar mixture constantly over heat until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture looks smooth and shiny, about 3 minutes.
- Remove mixture from heat and pour into a stand mixer bowl. Whisk on medium speed for about 5 minutes until the mixture has cooled and stiff peaks have formed.
- Put the mixer on low and add the butter and shorting beating until smooth.
- Add in the limoncello, lemon extract, and yellow gel food coloring and beat until combined.
Assmebly
- Once the cupcakes have cooled, pipe on the buttercream.
- Next, put the limoncello gel in a filling bag, and in the middle of the cupcake fill it with the gel
- Serve the cupcakes up and enjoy!
Notes
- You can adjust the limocello taste in the gel and buttercream to you liking.
- You can fill first with gel and then add the buttercream if you want
