Pennsylvania Dutch Food

I am from Pennsylvania, so Pennsylvania Dutch food was something I grew up with. I never realized that some of the Pennsylvania Dutch food I knew and loved wasn’t enjoyed in other states until I moved to Florida.

What Is Ham Loaf?

What is ham loaf? When I was at work, I said I was making a ham loaf recipe. Imagine my surprise when no one had any idea about what a ham loaf was. I was asked what is a ham loaf?

A ham loaf recipe is ground ham made like a meatloaf. It is a Pennsylvania Dutch food that I have grown up with.

Ham Loaf Recipe

The grocery store had some beautiful little tavern hams on sale. I bought 2 of them. The ham I used in the Hawaiian Ham Salad recipe. The other for this ham loaf recipe.

Instead of putting pineapple rings on top the ham loaf recipe why not put pineapple in the ham loaf. Make it more Hawaiian recipe.

Glaze For Ham Loaf

With the pineapple inside the ham loaf, what about a glaze for ham loaf? Using a glaze my mom has made for Easter hams, I decided that would be best for this Hawaiian Ham Loaf. It would add to the sweetness.

This looks like a great way to use up ham! Pineapple and ham go so well together - yum! :)

Ham loaf takes me back to my childhood! Our mother was in and out of the hospital in the years before she died, and when dad was in charge,we were at the mercy of quick meals from a workaholic during the work week. One of those was ham loaf from a small grocer near our house in Akron. He would pick up a ham loaf on his way home from work, toss it in the oven to heat up, and serve some corn or peas or beans as a side. We loved it, but after three nights in a row of ham loaf, we asked for a bit more variety!

That is true, having it 3 nights a week, it gets old quickly. My mom it was always buttered peas on the side
